Parallel crossings under runways at Texel International Airport

In February 2025, Brownline surveyed seven drills on Texel. From Den Burg, a new medium-voltage line will be installed to beyond the island's airport. On one of the drill locations, the airport's runways were crossed. With our innovative tools, this work was carried out safely, accurately, and efficiently, with minimal disruption.

These drills were carried out by Van Leeuwen Sleufloze Technieken - VLST. With these operations, the power supply on the island will be expanded. The seven drills around Texel's airport each had a length of about 280 m / 920 ft.

Accuracy needed for parallel drilling

With the Drillguide Gyro Steering Tool combined with GPS track, all drills were surveyed with the highest precision. This was important because the parallel drills would have limited space between them after pulling in the HDPE bundles. The smallest gap was 2 m / 6 ft.

The combination of Drillguide GST and GPS track provides the highest accuracy and certainty for determining the position of the drill head.

Bomb detection with UXOscope

The UXOscope was also used for these drills, because there was a risk of unexploded ordnance (UXO) being present in the ground. To ensure safe drilling, the UXOscope was used during the pilot bore to check for possible unexploded materials in the ground. These were not found and so the work could be carried out safely and without interruption.
